Escalator HANDRAIL Safety DEVICES
Escalator HANDRAIL Safety DEVICES
”In this article, we want to talk about handrail protection devices that help improve passenger safety when using escalators or moving walkways.<br /> Для этой цели существует четыре устройства, которые полезны для безопасности пассажиров:
Anti climbing device on the escalator
To avoid stepping on the lower outer platform or climbing over the parapet, anti-climbing device(s) must be installed. This device is located on the lower outer platform and starts at a height of 1000 ± 50 millimeters above the lower floor surface. The length of the device is 1000 millimeters parallel to the handrail. To ensure the safety of passengers’ hands and fingers, the height of this device may be increased by a maximum of 25 millimeters and may be lowered to 150 millimeters below the handrail, and the distance between the handrail and the anti-climbing device is 80 millimeters.
Access restriction device for escalator and moving walkway
If the escalator or moving walkway is installed next to a wall and the width of the lower outer plate exceeds 125 millimeters, an access restriction device must be installed above and below the wall to prevent passengers from standing on the lower outer plate. The distance between the handrail panel and the access restriction device shall be less than 120 millimeters.
When two escalators or moving walkways are parallel and the combined width of the lower outer slabs of both escalators is greater than 125 millimeters, an access restraint device must be installed above and below at the beginning of the lower outer slabs.
To ensure the safety of passengers’ hands and fingers, the height of this device may be increased to 25 millimeters in both versions and may be lowered to 150 millimeters below the handrail.
Anti-slip device for escalators and moving walkways
An anti-slip device must be installed on an escalator or moving walkway with a continuous handrail with an upper outer plate if the escalator is installed next to a wall and the distance between the wall and the center of the handrail exceeds 300 millimeters to prevent slipping on the upper outer plate. The distance between the handrail and the anti-slip device shall be more than 100 millimeters, and the distance between them shall not exceed 1800 millimeters. The height of the device must not be less than 20 millimeters and must not have sharp corners and edges.
In addition, if two escalators or moving walkways are parallel and the distance between the centers of their handrails exceeds 400 millimeters, an anti-slip device must be installed.
Note: All exposed fasteners of handrail guards must be resistant to attack.
Anti-collision device
A collision hazard often occurs at floor crossings or in cross escalators when passengers lean over the handrail to look down or when they cross their arms over the handrail. To avoid this hazard, suitable widths must be considered and a collision protection device must be installed. This requires the installation of a triangular-shaped safety device in the form of a vertical reflector at a standard height above the level of the handrail. This reflector must not have sharp cutting edges.
