COVID 19 Cleaning and use of escalators

With the proliferation of COVID, effective cleaning and disinfection on escalators and moving walkways has become more important than ever. Bacteria and dirt can be hidden and invisible. Shoes can get dirt on escalator steps and hands can leave marks and dirt on handrails. Paying attention to the surfaces we touch is important not only for our personal safety, but also for public health.

Use of escalators

The recommendations for using escalators and moving walkways during COVID are similar to our advice for elevator use. There are two basic principles:

Maintain social distance
As everywhere else, it is important to keep your distance: there should be 5 escalator steps (or 2 meters on an escalator) between you and the other user.
Be careful when touching the handrail
If possible, we recommend wearing gloves when touching the handrail. If you cannot wear gloves, avoid touching your face and then sanitize or wash your hands thoroughly.

As a building owner, we recommend that you make a warning sign, a sticker reminding equipment users to follow these principles. A possible option is to add a blue “Safety Legs” sign or similar warning sign on tape to show the location of the legs. Escalator company AmadaTECH can help if you would like.

Escalator Cleaning

For every elevator owner, building owner and facility manager, cleaning the elevating equipment should be a regular escalator maintenance activity that is sometimes overlooked. However, with a maintenance plan in place and the right equipment, cleaning an escalator is not difficult. How often should an escalator be cleaned?
On average, an escalator is cleaned once or twice a month, unless the escalator has never been cleaned before and is very dirty.
What additional cleaning should be done during an escalator lockout due to COVID?
To minimize the spread of infection, we recommend wiping the handrails regularly with a disinfected damp cloth or alcohol wipe.

How to clean an escalator?
Often owners of escalators and/or moving walkways purchase specialized escalator cleaning equipment (or use a specialized cleaning company) that uses a “dry” method for deep cleaning. Dry cleaning involves placing the machine on the elevator equipment while it is in operation. The movement of the escalator combined with the cleaning machine helps to remove embedded dirt in the tread area that conventional brushes miss.
